For many years, it appears the relationship between many physicians and pharmacists has been strained. While there are many reasons for this perception, truthfully, physicians and pharmacists working in collaboration provide exceptional health benefits for their patients. The benefits are so significant that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) created a guide to help establish links between the physician and pharmacists’ communities.

Physician-pharmacist collaboration can enhance the provision of wellness services. When you have a physician, who understands various health conditions, testing, and monitoring, working with a pharmacist, who understands, medications, supplements, and how these interact with each other or certain health conditions, you create a team that utilizes their individual strengths to provide significant health and wellness services to their patients. It is a win-win-win situation.

Multiple studies support the physician-pharmacist collaboration for improved health and wellness with patients. When providing team care, studies showed that patients had greater adherence to therapy, better health outcomes, and an overall positive experience.

At 360 Living, we provide a physician-pharmacist team approach. Both members have been trained in functional medicine, and both recognize the strengths that each individual provides to the team. Working together, Dr. Keith, MD, and Dr. Smith, PharmD, develop health and wellness plans personalized to each patient. Dr. Keith has significant understanding of a systems-based focus on care, and explores each system in great detail with her patients. Dr. Smith understands how various drugs, supplements, and other health practices may affect different systems. Having explored multiple paths and contributors to the overall state of health, the providers assimilate the information and provide the patients with an in-depth view of their health. The patient can then make informed decisions about their health and wellness, knowing that the providers, working together, have made the patient’s well-being paramount. We believe that this type of collaboration will assist individuals on their journey toward vibrant health!
